The chimney liner gives an added layer of protection between the inside of the chimney and the framing. A damaged liner or no liner at all allows gases from the fire to corrode the acids in the masonry and can cause defects that can appear in the chimney.

The most common chimney liner is a clay tile flue liner. Poor maintenance of the chimney can lead to gaps between clay tiles leading to deterioration between mortar joints. Once the flue lining has been damaged repair or replacement of the flue system is required by the current code with an approved material to ensure proper and safe operation of the chimney. 

Gaps between the mortar joints can cause a health risk by allowing poisonous gases to escape from the chimney into your house. Gases rise up the chimney similarly to liquid being sipped through a straw; if the straw has a crack or a hole in it the liquid will not flow effectively through it. The chimney must be free of gaps and cracks in order to work correctly, otherwise combustible creosote can build up outside the flue liner and can lead to a fire hazard. 

Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, and unlike clay liners, a stainless steel liner will not crack or split over time. This also allows the liner to last much longer than liners made of other materials, which can save you money on replacement costs over time.
